The Bottom Line is that we help brands increase their profits by making more of their traffic buy more stuff.
We do that through Conversion Revenue Optimization, Direct Response Copywriting, Funnel Economics Optimization, and User-Focused Design.

Lots of buzzwords, right?

Here’s What That Looks Like In Practice:

  • A subscription letter product business was having trouble with customer acquisition. We worked with them to have conversations with customers and built 3 new landing pages from scratch
  • We redesigned a rewrote a sales page for Zumba that increased conversion rate by 17%
  • We helped a sexual health brand find a hidden customer segment that converted 30% better than their average visitor. We built a bundle for that specific avatar that increased the AOV
  • We tested pricing on a $9, 5 Day challenge - $9, $19, $29 because the client had never done it before. Guess what? $29 converted better than $9, and made $20 extra per order
If you’re not split-testing, you need to start. If you are split-testing and doing so haphazardly, or worse, testing button colors or other minor changes, listen up.

If your brand has been around for more than 3 years and you’ve been growing near or beyond 8 figures, I don’t need to tell you that it’s gotten harder and more expensive to acquire customers.

Like, a lot harder.

The secret that no one’s saying is that it’s only gotten harder for some brands.

There are still a subset of brands that are . They’re just quietly taking up market share.

Quite a few of them are our clients.

And most, if not all, are focusing on making their traffic more efficient.

AKA getting more sales from the same amount of traffic.

Here’s how it’s done

Executing Tests

Direct Response Marketing & Understanding Your Customer

Holistic CRO

1 )   Executing Tests

1)   Executing Tests

Look. if you aren’t testing, it’s our very, very strong opinion you’re losing out on revenue. And a lot of it.

You test new ads right? You need to be testing your website.

Your market will tell you what they want. You just need to do One. Test. per. Week. That’s it.

Most brand owners and CMOs know they should be testing.

But there are two main reasons why they still don’t:

a.)   “We don’t know what to test”
b.)   “We don’t have the time or resources internally”
a.)   “We don’t know what to test”
b.)   “We don’t have the time or
        resources internally”
Let’s talk about a.) first.

If you don’t know what to test, fear not.

We use an extremely simple framework we’ve dubbed the Inside Out Funnel.

Basically, take your standard website funnel:

Basically, take your standard
website funnel:

Product page
⬇️
Cart
⬇️
Checkout
⬇️
Upsells
Now, start at the bottom and work your way up, completing just one test per week.

We start at the bottom to reduce chokepoints. Every buyer must go through checkout if they want to be a buyer.

And your funnel is only as strong as your weakest link. So start testing that.

Here’s an example of a test we performed for Crio Bru, a brewed cacao beverage brand:

This improvement fixed the bottleneck and leads to an additional $684,000 in revenue every single year.

Now obviously we don’t want you to be doing red vs. green button tests. That’s going to get us a whole lot of nothing in terms of meaningful conversion lifts.

Which is why we focus on…

2 )   Direct Response Marketing and Understanding Your Customer

2)   Direct Response Marketing and Understanding Your Customer

Combine Direct Response Copywriting with Top Tier User Experience Design and you will be miles ahead of your competition.
We don’t like “secrets” and I don’t like “hacks”
But… if there was one thing you could do that would give you superpowers for your conversions, this is it.

The brand who understands their customers the most will win. If you speak their language, describe their pain, tell stories, use mechanisms, understand levels of awareness and market sophistication, and, ultimately, make your customer want to buy, it becomes very, very difficult to lose.

So what does that look like? Should you just hire a copywriter and call it a day?

Unfortunately, while I love copywriters, they are not going to fly in with a superhero cape and save the day. They’ll be the first ones to tell you that.

If you/your internal team doesn’t understand the customer after years, a copywriter is not going to after a few days.

And yes, we’ve heard “we completely understand our customer!” dozens of times before. Unless you are on the phone with them every single day, there are insights to be gleaned.

Sometimes, those insights produce a lot of additional revenue.
Check this out:
Through customer conversations and reading through forums, we realized that Zumba was missing out on a segment of the market that wanted to have fun while losing weight. They didn’t care about the best results, or the fastest results, they wanted it to not be boring.

So we wrote and designed a brand new page and split tested it against the current one.

Result? 17% lift in conversion rate.

Result? 17% lift
in conversion rate.

If you aren’t listening to your customer, talking to them, researching them, and then applying direct response marketing principles, you’re making your and your team’s lives infinitely harder.

Once you nail this, you can move on to the third and hardest step.

3 )   Holistic CRO: Conversion Revenue Optimization

3)   Holistic CRO: Conversion Revenue Optimization

Admittedly, if you’re doing the first two things, you’re ahead of 90% of your competitors.

We talk with hundreds of brands a year and maybe a handful are doing the first two properly.

But when you want to truly increase your profits/EBITDA, you need someone to bring all the pieces together. If you’re the CEO and have the time + expertise, you can absolutely be the glue that holds it all together.

That’s why we’ve dubbed our methodology Conversion Revenue Optimization. It’s not just enough to optimize the conversion rate. We need to optimize for revenue.

A lot of that includes building dedicated landing pages and sales funnels rather than just sending traffic to generic product pages, as they are often the best way to convert cold traffic.

But there needs to be someone who bridges the gap between the fiscal health of the business and marketing.
Someone needs to answer questions like:
  • Are we maximizing our company’s valuation with our customer acquisition strategy?
  • Are we building recurring revenue into our customer acquisition? If not, how do we do it?
  • Do we need new acquisition funnels?
  • Are we missing out on entire segments of our market?
  • Is our customer acquisition profitable?
  • Are we advertising efficiently? Are we wasting ad spend?
  • Is our ad creative congruent with our pages?
  • Where are we sending traffic to? Should we be running lead magnets, sales pages, quiz funnels, all of the above?
  • Should we be running more offers?
  • What does our Q4 strategy look like?
More junior team members typically “don’t know what they don’t know” and most agencies frankly just won’t have the time to care.

But someone does need to be answering these questions, especially if the goal is to exit the business.

You need marketers that think like CEOs

Here’s what that looks like:

Ryan Kelly sells piano courses. As a PhD in piano, he can teach as well as anyone.

We started working together with Ryan in early 2020 (fun times right?). In two months, he scaled up to $150k per month.

That’s all well and good, but we spotted a looming problem on the horizon: he was far too dependent on one-time purchases. Everything was going well up to that point, but we knew that if we didn’t help Ryan build in some recurring revenue, his business would be in a very precarious position.
He had a membership and community offer that was just sitting there. It wasn’t being marketed and wasn’t a focus. Even still, it was generating $18k per month with little attention.

So we helped him build out a financial model and figure out the best way to install the membership into his current funnels. We initially decided on testing via upsells. When we got a 30% take rate on our first test, we knew we had something.

We took those learnings and helped him create a brand new frontend offer that would allow him to acquire customers for net $0. Basically, his average order value equalling his cost per acquisition. If we could do that, we could acquire members “for free”.

We did that by helping him rewrite the page, create the new offer, position the offer, and make sure that his cost per acquisition was what we estimated it would be.

Two years and a whole bunch of tests later, his business has $220k in monthly recurring revenue alone.

Now… what other CRO agency does that?
If you can do all three of these steps, you’re in the 99th percentile of brands.
Obviously, nothing is ever 100% guaranteed. But this will put you far, far ahead of your competition.

So, now we know what we need to do. Let’s take a look at how much it would cost.
If you want to do it internally, you can hire:
If you want to do it internally,
you can hire:
A designer: $6k per month
A developer: $8k or more per month
A copywriter: $5k or more per month
A CMO: $15k or more per month

For a grand total of: $34k per month, minimum.
Then, you’ll need to train them all. Unfortunately, the people who are really good at this stuff are either doing their own thing or very, very expensive. If you want a complete expert in any one of those positions you could easily be paying double or more.

This is not a bad route though. It just takes a lot of time, capital, and assumes that the brand owner knows enough about these concepts to train someone up.

The other option is you just don’t hire anyone and keep blaming ads. Yea, you’ll save on labor, but let’s look at what it costs you:

Let’s say you convert at 3% this month, got 500,000 site visitors and have a $60 AOV. With proper CRO it’s quite reasonable to say you could have converted at 3.8%.
500,000 site visitors x .008 x $60 = 4,000 missed purchases x $60 = $240,000 in missed revenue
500,000 site visitors x .008 x $60
= 4,000 missed purchases x $60
= $240,000 in missed revenue
That’s revenue you don’t need an extra penny in ad spend for.

So we obviously have to do something. We can’t just let that revenue slip through our fingers….

Who Is This For:

  • 7 and 8 Figure DTC brands, who are challenged with rising CPA’s/CPM’s when trying to scale
  • 7 and 8 Figure DTC brands that are trying to do whatever it takes to take every percentage of market share they possibly can
  • Agency owners that are looking to partner to get their clients the best results by achieving maximum ROI

Our Process:

After working with over 200+ clients, we understand the exact principles and methodology every brand must follow in order to maximize their CRO efforts.

It’s why clients of ours decide to work with us long-term, and see record breaking year over year growth.
The Inside Out Funnel split testing framework is what’s responsible for this type of growth.

And the process itself is pretty straightforward:
  • We’ll conduct a full site and funnel audit to identify every bottleneck in your buyer journey
  • We put together a structured and scheduled split testing roadmap
  • We build new landing pages for market segmentation
  • We find new winning offers, that include new upsell opportunities
  • Iterative testing for seasonality, audience testing, and more
All we do is start at the END of the customer journey that typically gets neglected. We’ve worked so hard to get a visitor to checkout - it’s devastating to lose them right as they are about to buy.

Plus, sending more traffic to a leaky checkout will just exacerbate the problem.

We start THERE and work backwards with simple, smart tests. Like this one…

We generate results for our clients by injecting our expertise in Direct Response Marketing to run the most impactful tests. It’s not just about whether the “buy now” button should be red or green….

It’s about understanding the buyer to the fullest extent, and re-working design and messaging that resonates the way it should to convert.

But, don’t just take our word for it….

Michael Clark

Owner, The Flower Letters

Working with 4080 Marketing has been a game changer, and our conversion rate has only gone up year over year.
We were able to help the Flower Letters achieve an additional $294k in additional Quarterly Revenue through Conversion Revenue Optimization…

We heavily applied Direct Response Marketing Principles to their sales funnel, and actively split tested their buyer journey, working Inside to Out to increase conversions, raise AOV, and increase LTV.

Throughout our time with them, we’ve had a lot of wins.

Some are more major than others.

Now there’s one added caveat with the results for this business – it’s a subscription business! For subscription business, the wins from split-testing are compounded.

If you have a $9 per month product with a 20 month average retention, each additional purchase doesn’t add $9… it adds $180 in revenue per additional purchase.

So if your business has a recurring revenue model, you’ll want to take these tests even more to heart.

An example of a major winning test, is a Homepage Above The Fold test.
This almost always is a winner with every client we work with. Usually, homepages are often ignored and not built to convert traffic. However, that’s a grave error.

The before for the Flower Letters assumed that someone was already very familiar with them – if you just landed on this page from an ad, you still don’t really know what the company does. That’s a problem.

The key with the homepage above the fold sections is to include a headline that explains the big promise your product delivers, include social proof, and an image that shows the experience of your product.
In this case, we redid the whole thing to make that happen.

Building a system that allows you to split-test the most important elements of your site to increase conversion rate is one of the highest ROI activities you can do in your business.

Ryan Kelly

Owner, Piano by Pictures Academy

After working with 4080 for the past year on CRO, we've. gone from $18,000 MRR to $175,000 MMR, and I've been able to scale ad spend from $1500/day to $8,000/day.

How?

Conversion Revenue Optimization

More specifically, working within our Inside Out Funnel split testing framework, while going as deep as we could into Direct Response Marketing as the main lever behind all tests we ran.

Before working with their team, they were doing ZERO structured split testing.

Every once in a while they would re-do their sales page, then run ads there for a few weeks.

But I’m talking about a full-on split testing regime that was non-existent.

They run an info/digital course business that leverages a robust sales funnel with LTO’s and a membership program.

The name of the game here was to ensure they achieved ad spend liquidation, while converting high enough on the back-end to support a rising CPA as they rapidly scaled spend.

So what did we do?

Ran 4-6 split tests, consistently, for months and months on end. Constantly adapting to market trends, changes to buyer behavior, and segmented the market as they tested new audiences with new creatives.

We had a strict schedule in place that looked at copywriting throughout their funnel, overall design, core offers, and value propositions.

And as they scaled up ad-spend, we had to constantly watch these elements of their funnel, as the level of resonation within the market was always in flux.

All in all, in the pasty 12 months, we’ve been able to increase their conversion rate from:

2% —> 5% on their initial low ticket. Successfully liquidating ad-spend.
And achieve a 10% bump to their back-end conversion rate into their membership.

Leading to them being able to increase their ad-spend from $1500/day, to $8000/day.

Even More Results…

Zumba Fitness

Increased Conversion Rate by 17% through testing new headlines

Rewritten and Redesigned Landing Page

Increases Revenue per Visitor by 107%

Landing Page Above the Fold Split-Test

Increases CVR by 35%

So… how can we help?

We touched on it a bit before, but we work with clients in two main ways:

1

We do it all for you. Test ideation, copywriting, design, coding, quality assurance testing, landing page building, all of it. You’ll need to be involved to approve tests and help us as we learn more about our market - but it’s a pretty minimal involvement from your side, though we encourage as much involvement as possible because it helps us get better results!

If you don’t have developers and designers who are conversion minded and you want to install our team directly into your business, this is a great option. Your business should be generating at least $5m per year in revenue for this option to make financial sense for you.

2

We consult with your team in a “done-with-you” model. If you have a great designer and developer, amazing. If you have a great developer but not a designer, no problem either. We’re here to bring our expertise in offer building, direct response copywriting, customer psychology, and everything else you’ve read so far on this page. We can plug in the gaps with your team.

This option is typically best for teams that can execute fast and already have the team in place. Usually, this option is best for businesses well into 8 figures that have built out dev teams and a complex tech stack or businesses between $3m and $5m per year that have scrappy teams that execute quickly.
When you book a call with us, we’ll audit your site live on call, give you split-test ideas, and talk about your business infrastructure to see which option is best for your team if we’re able to help. So don’t worry if you’re not sure just yet.

We measure our progress through our Incremental Revenue sheet. It’s not gonna have a place in the Louvre, but it tells you what you care about most: your ROI from working with us.
We’ve helped this client add on $276k in monthly incremental revenue. That’s additional revenue they get every single month as a result of split tests we’ve run with them.

Now is the time when you’d normally see the scarcity and urgency coming out on a sales page, right?

Ok, so let’s get to it then.

Let’s talk business owner to business owner. I’m going to make a wild leap that you’ve worked with agencies or freelancers before. Was I right? I’m a psychic!

Usually brands have not-so-great experiences with either. The agency is too big to care and the freelancer is too busy with other client work or prospecting for new clients.

We’ve hit a sweet spot.

We’re a boutique agency on purpose. We’re small. Right now as you’re reading this, we’re a team of 7. But we’re all really good at what we do.

Since we’re small, we don’t have to spend absurd amounts of time hiring and focusing on our internal operations. We get to focus on client work.

But since we’re not a one-person show, we have the time and energy to care for all of our clients.

Now, the trick is that we fiercely protect that principle.

I (Ethan), personally have seen what happens when agencies scale. I don’t care how good the SOPs and processes are, results are not consistent - because you’re scaling people.

For better or for worse, we decided to go a different route: sharpen our marketing swords to the umpteenth degree and work with clients we love for a really long time.

So far, it’s working out!

Now, with that tangent aside, the point is that we can only work with so many clients at a time. When we get close to capacity, we simply help out as best we can with advice and stay in touch. We don’t go over capacity.

If you’re seeing this page, it means that we have at least one slot available to work with us.

If you’re even the least bit curious to see if we can help your brand increase profits without spending more in ads, it’s my (admittedly biased) recommendation you book in some time to chat with us 🤓

If we can’t help, we’ll let you know and point you in the right direction. Worst case, we’ll refer you to someone who can help, best case, we get to work together a little bit down the road.

So what does this mean for your business?

We’ll take over your entire split-testing efforts. We’ll ask for you to be as involved as you want, but typically it goes better the more buy-in there is from your team.

If your business receives 500,000 sessions to your homepage per month it converts at 3.5%, you get 17,500 purchases per month from that page.

We split-test ruthlessly until we increase the conversion rate above the control. Let’s say we observe a 4% conversion rate during a test.

Just like that, you’ve gotten 2,500 additional conversions every single month, without spending a single dollar more to increase traffic.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s your split-testing methodology?

Our Inside Out Funnel framework is our core methodology that gets clients their results. If you’re unsure of exactly what that entails, be sure to watch the video at the top of the page.

In short, it works by testing your funnel from bottom to top, reducing any chokepoints in your conversion funnel.

How do you measure results?

Ultimately, our goal is to increase Incremental Revenue. That is, the revenue that is directly attributed to split testing.

We do that by increasing revenue per session which takes into account average order value and conversion rate.

How big is the team?

We’re intentionally a small team of 7 people. And not to toot our own horn… but we’re pretty good. We decided long ago to work with high-growth brands that have serious scale potential and are enjoyable to work with. So what that means is we restrict our client list and only work with people that we’re nearly certain we’re going to have a great working relationship with.

What industries do you work in?

Our main area of expertise lies in DTC e-commerce brands. We do have a variety of experience in Info/Digital products, as well as an extensive A/B split testing history with SaaS.

Within that, we’ve worked with brands in various CPG verticals (beverage, food, coffee, coffee alternatives, etc.), haircare, skincare, fashion, athleisure, novelty, supplements, and a whole lot of others!

How should I expect results from split-testing?

Once we onboard a client, we perform our audits and lay out our split-testing roadmap. From there we begin to execute tests immediately.

From there, we could see improvements in revenue per session as quickly as the first test. For full context, the longest we’ve not discovered a significant winning test for a client is three weeks.

With A/B testing, results compound on top of one another. With every test you learn something new. Whether the first test bumps revenue per session by 1% or 100%, it’s still a win that allows us to cultivate future tests that have a much higher probability of success.

What makes you guys different from other agencies?

Point-blank: we don’t just test button colors. Our background is in direct response copywriting and offer building. At risk of sounding a bit pompous, but it’s much harder to sell digital products than physical products, so it’s kind of like us driving an F1 car to drop the kids off at school.

We’re a small team on purpose. We overcommunicate. We plugin to your business directly and routinely go out of scope to make sure our clients win.

Long story short, we care about your business as if it were our own.

How much traffic do I need to qualify?

Minimum of 100,000 site visitors per month. The more the better!

If you’re below that, you should still be split-testing, it’s just likely that we’ll be too expensive to justify the ROI.

How does our team fit into it?

We bring in a full stack team of strategists, copywriters, designers, and developers to execute all tests and optimizations. If you already have a team in place, we can come in to fill the gaps, and spear-head all CRO activities for them to execute, to ensure you’re making the most of their efforts.

If you have the team but need strategy, we work with about half of our clients in a purely consultative “Done with You” capacity

How fast could we get started?

Once you’ve booked a call with our team and we both feel it’s a good fit, we begin testing as fast as Week 1, with onboarding only taking about 48 hours to complete from start to finish.

What services do you offer?

1️⃣ We either do everything for you as a full stack team, including everything from coming up with optimizations, using our developer team to put the tests together, we’ll analyze and review test data, and implement the new pages into your site and funnel to push the changes live.

2️⃣ We consult 1on1 with your team internally, to walk you through exactly what tech to be using, what test to run, how to design and think about high-impact tests, how to push the changes live to your site and funnel, and how to manage a productive and successful split testing regime.

How much does it cost?

Pricing is pretty typically custom to each client. But, a good range to be thinking of when it comes to full stack, fully managed CRO, is at least $7.5k per month. Could be less, could be more, just depends on what will need to be done, and over what timeframe.

Well that’s it! If you’ve made it this far, you’re a legend. Book in some time to talk with us so we can congratulate you on your lengendarity.
